The Indian Optician was founded in 1968, at a time when optical journalism was at a nascent stage in India, by the late S.L. Kumar, whose noble goal was to promote Indian (and global) eye health by supporting the ophthalmic and optometric professions, industries and trade. Mr. Kumar’s vision accurately assessed the need for, and potential of a reliable and consistent news source, and platform that hosted open discussion, diverse views and information exchange.
In addition to the leading bi-monthly journal, our founder-editor was also a visionary and the pioneer of the optical exhibitions in India. He launched the first international trade fair and exhibition in ophthalmic optics, then known as INDOPTICA, in 1978. The exhibition kept growing with each passing year and presently the exhibitions are now organized by his son Mr. Harish Kumar of RSD Expositions, under the title of “In-Optics” International Trade Fair and Exhibition. In-Optics is equally well-known in both the international and domestic optical sectors.
