Vision 2020: Robust at 25 and Moving ahead with the times
Location, it is said, is vital in the retail business. And Vision 2020 certainly has that, situated as it is in Mumbai’s Bandra, known as ‘The Queen of the Suburbs’, and opposite the legendary Mehboob Studios. Of course there’s much more to it than that to be consistently successful, as the Complete Eye Care Centre has been for the past 25 years since it was founded by Sanjay Tekchandani.
His Vision was never the year 2020, but was always Perfect 20/20 Vision, says Mr Tekchandani. His large state-of-the-art showroom reflects this passion: A team of Experienced Professionals including well-qualified Optometrists extend excellent service to all its patients, and the best products are available under one roof.
No wonder then that their list of clients reads like a Who’s Who of Mumbai: Don’t be surprised if you walk in and espy Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, Arnab Goswami, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Vidya Balan, one or the other of The Kapoor family, Salman Khan or a family member, Jackie Shroff, Katrina Kaif, Pooja Bhatt, Subash Ghai, Zeenat Aman…
Sanjay Tekchandani says he provided Preity Zinta with the glasses she wore in Kal Ho Naa Ho, the hugely successful 2003 film. This, he says, brought about a big acceptance of spectacles on the big screen and set a trend.
Vision 2020 retails leading brands and labels from the world over in frames, sunglasses and contact lenses. These include leading brands from major companies Luxottica, Safilo, the Kering Group, Pramukh Optical, Ronak Optik India, and Dynamic Eyewear. The lenses they offer are from renowned manufacturers such as Zeiss, Essilor, Nikon, Shamir and Kodak. In contact lenses too all the major brands like Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, Cooper Vision, Johnson and Johnson are their preferred suppliers.
While the optical store was opened in 1996, Sanjay introduced LASIK surgery in 2008. Along with Dr Ambarish Darak, they hold a record for LASIK of 208 eyes in a single day on 11 July 2009. Today Vision 2020 is a Complete Eye Care Centre, providing services like Cataract and LASIK surgery.
In today’s challenging world, Sanjay says, it is necessary to constantly innovate, change and keep up with the times. The traditional retail eye care practice has been impacted by online portals and also due to the extended presence of organised chain stores. Also, ophthalmologists have their own in-house spectacles and contact lens dispensing sections.
All told, boutique stores need to create a unique identity, which is what Vision 2020 has succeeded in doing. Dispensing high quality progressive lenses, and specialty contact lenses like Toric lenses and multifocal lenses emphasise their differentiation factor.
Vision 2020 provides niche services such as spectacles in one hour and immediate delivery of contact lenses. The store is open all days and its prime location has ample car parking space.
A digital presence, he adds, whether on social media or Google, is now a necessity. His elder son Akash, who is an expert in Digital and CRM, leads their digital presence and initiatives. Sanjay is also looking forward to his younger son Uday joining him. Uday is an Ophthalmologist currently pursuing his Senior Residency in Retina from PGIMER Chandigarh.
